Introduction: Tools of the Taxonomist
In Part 1 we met the seven-level hierarchy that organises life. But how does a taxonomist actually work — how do they compare a fresh specimen against the thousands already described, how do they store material for future study, and how do they teach students to recognise species? This part looks at the tools of taxonomy: herbaria, botanical gardens, museums, zoological parks and identification keys. We close with the full set of NCERT exercises and detailed solutions.
1.4 Taxonomical Aids
Taxonomical aids are the physical collections and reference works that make identification and classification possible. Without them, every new specimen would have to be studied from scratch.

1.4.1 Herbarium
A herbarium is a store-house of dried, pressed plant specimens mounted on stiff sheets. Each sheet carries a label with:
- Scientific name of the plant
- Family and common name
- Date and place of collection
- Name of the collector
Sheets are filed in a universally accepted classification system (commonly Bentham & Hooker's for angiosperms) so that any researcher in the world can locate a specimen quickly. Major herbaria include the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, UK, the Central National Herbarium at Kolkata, the National Herbarium of India, Lucknow, and the Herbarium of the Forest Research Institute, Dehradun.
1.4.2 Botanical Gardens
A botanical garden holds living plants grown for reference and research. Every plant carries a small label bearing its scientific name and family. Historic examples: the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, the Indian Botanical Garden, Howrah (Kolkata), and the Lloyd Botanical Garden, Darjeeling.
1.4.3 Museum
A biological museum houses preserved plants and animals for study. Insects are pinned to display boards and kept in airtight glass cases. Larger animals are preserved in formalin or, for birds and mammals, as taxidermy (stuffed and mounted skins). Museums are found in most universities and research institutions.
1.4.4 Zoological Parks
A zoological park, or zoo, houses living wild animals in captive conditions that mimic their natural habitat. Zoos are places of study (feeding, behaviour, breeding) and increasingly play a role in ex-situ conservation of endangered species. Examples: the National Zoological Park, Delhi and Mysore Zoo.
1.4.5 Keys
A key is a printed tool that helps you identify an unknown organism by guiding you through a series of contrasting alternatives. The most common type is a dichotomous key, where each step forces a choice between exactly two options (di- = two).
Other Aids
Beyond the big five above, taxonomists also lean on written resources: a flora (catalogue of plants of an area), a manual (practical guide for identification), a monograph (complete treatise on one taxon), and catalogues of species.
Aim: Design a 3-step dichotomous key that separates five trees from your school or neighbourhood.
- Collect one leaf (or clear photograph) of five different trees.
- List an easy contrasting character (e.g., simple vs compound leaf) that splits them into two groups.
- Repeat with new contrasting characters until each tree ends up alone at the end of a branch.
- Swap keys with a classmate and check if they can identify your five trees using your key.
Choose characters that do not change with the season (venation pattern, leaf arrangement, presence of thorns) rather than ones that do (colour, size of the youngest leaf). A good key survives across seasons.
Chapter Summary
- Life is marked by three defining features: metabolism, cellular organisation, and consciousness/response to stimuli.
- Growth and reproduction occur in living things but are not exclusive to them, so they are not defining.
- About 1.7–1.8 million species have been described. Each gets a universal Latin name via binomial nomenclature (Linnaeus, 1750s).
- The taxonomic hierarchy has seven ranks: Kingdom → Phylum/Division → Class → Order → Family → Genus → Species.

- Biological species concept: a group of individuals that can interbreed freely in nature to produce fertile offspring, and are reproductively isolated from other such groups. Works well for higher plants and animals.
- Morphological species concept: organisms that share a consistent set of structural features — useful when reproductive data is unavailable.
- Phylogenetic species concept: the smallest group that shares a common ancestor — widely used with DNA evidence.
