An AI tutor is software that explains a topic in conversation, answers a student’s specific doubt at any hour, and checks whether they understood it. It improves marks when it is mapped to the syllabus and pointed at the chapters a diagnostic shows are weak. It does not improve marks when it is used as a search engine for answers, or as a video library nobody opens.

What does an AI tutor actually do?
Three things, and it is worth separating them because products differ wildly in which they offer:

What it is not: a replacement for a teacher. A teacher sets the standard, notices what a student is avoiding, and carries the relationship. An AI tutor is for eleven at night, when the doubt actually arrives and there is nobody to ask.
Does it improve marks?
It depends entirely on how it is used, and honest answers here are rare.

The honest framing: an AI tutor removes the two biggest frictions in self-study — nobody to ask, and not knowing what to work on. It cannot supply the effort.

What should a parent check before paying for one?
- Is it mapped to your child’s board and class? “Explains physics” is not the same as “explains the CBSE Class 10 chapter your child has an exam on Thursday.” Ask to see the chapter list and check it against the textbook.
- Does it ask questions back? If it only answers, it is a search engine with better manners.
- Can you see what happened? Ask to see a progress report. If there is nothing to look at, you will never know whether it worked.
- Does it start free? Anything that improves marks can afford to demonstrate that before charging.
- Does it claim a guaranteed score? Walk away. Nobody can promise that, and the promise itself tells you what you are dealing with.

How do you know it is working?
Not by hours logged, and not by how confident your child sounds. By re-testing the same chapters.
The loop that makes the difference: run a chapter-level diagnostic → work on the three weakest chapters for a fortnight → run it again. If the red chapters are turning green, it is working. If they are not, something needs to change: the chapters, the method, or the amount of writing on paper.

Is an AI tutor safe for a school student?
Look for three things. Content built for K-12 and mapped to the syllabus, so the tool has subject boundaries rather than being an open-ended chatbot. A parent-visible progress report, so an adult can see what actually happened. And a clear answer on what data is stored and how to delete it.

Is an AI tutor safe for a school student?
Look for one built for K-12 with content mapped to the syllabus, a parent-visible progress report, and a clear data-deletion policy. An open-ended chatbot with no subject boundaries is not the same thing.
Can an AI tutor replace coaching?
For some students with strong self-discipline, largely yes. For most, it works best alongside a teacher who provides structure and accountability.

Does it work without good internet?
Text chat is light and works on a slow connection. Voice needs a steadier link; if the line is poor, type instead.
Can I try it before paying?
